FAS-113DG

Description

1. Product Overview

The FAS-113DG (manufactured by DEIF A/S) is an automatic generator synchronisation controller (ANSI Code 25) designed to synchronise a single generator to a live busbar and issue a closing command to the generator’s circuit breaker when voltage, frequency (slip), and phase angle differences are within preset limits.
It supports a wide range of prime movers, from slow-response diesel engines to fast-response gas turbines, by adjusting control pulse timingDEIF. The unit includes automatic voltage regulation, breaker closing time compensation, and LED status indication, making it suitable for industrial, land-based power generation applications.

2. Key Features

  • Full Automatic Synchronisation: Voltage, frequency, and phase angle matching for generator-to-busbar connectionDEIF.

  • Breaker Time Compensation: Precisely advances the closing command to account for breaker mechanical delay.

Voltage Regulation Control: Built-in voltage matching to minimise reactive power on closureDEIF.

  • Wide Compatibility: Works with diesel engines, gas turbines, and other prime moversDEIF.

  • LED Status Indicators: Power, frequency control active, and sync command LEDs for quick diagnostics.

  • DIN Rail or Panel Mount: Flexible mounting options (35 mm DIN rail or base plate).

  • Noise Immunity: Special filters for high-distortion grids to prevent false synchronisation.

  • Compact & Robust: Industrial-grade enclosure for harsh environments.

4. Application Scope

  • Land-Based Generator Sets: Standby/prime power for factories, hospitals, and data centres.

  • Grid Parallel Systems: Synchronisation of single generators to utility busbars.

  • CHP & Cogeneration: Synchronising gas engine/turbine generators to mains.

  • Industrial Plants: Continuous power generation with grid connection capability.

  • Diesel/Gas Power Stations: Small-to-medium power generation units.

5. Installation & Wiring

5.1 Installation Requirements

  1. Mounting: Install vertically on a DIN rail or flat panel; ensure ≥50 mm clearance for ventilation.

  2. Environment: Avoid direct sunlight, moisture, corrosive gases, and excessive vibration.

  3. Orientation: Keep the unit upright; do not mount upside down or sideways.

5.2 Terminal Wiring (Simplified)

TerminalDescriptionWire Gauge
1–224 VDC Power Supply (+/−)1.5 mm²
3–4Generator Voltage Input (L1/N)1.0–2.5 mm²
5–6Busbar Voltage Input (L1/N)1.0–2.5 mm²
7–8Frequency Control Output (to Governor)1.5 mm²
9–10Voltage Control Output (to AVR)1.5 mm²
11–12Sync Closing Command (to Breaker)2.5 mm²
13Chassis Ground (Earth)2.5 mm²
Wiring Notes:
  • Use twisted-pair cables for control signals to reduce noise.

  • Never open CT circuits (if used for voltage sensing).

  • Tighten terminals to 0.8–1.0 Nm to avoid loose connections.

6. Front Panel & Operation

6.1 Front Panel Layout

  • POWER LED: On when 24 VDC supply is present.

  • FREQ LED: Flashes when frequency control (speed matching) is active.

  • SYNC LED: Lights solid when all sync conditions are met; flashes during synchronisation.

  • Adjustment Potentiometers:

    • VOLTAGE: Sets allowable voltage difference (±1–5% Un).

    • FREQ: Sets allowable slip frequency (0.05–0.5 Hz).

    • PHASE: Sets allowable phase angle (±3°/±5°).

    • BREAKER: Adjusts closing time compensation (0–500 ms).

6.2 Synchronisation Process

  1. Power On: Apply 24 VDC; POWER LED lights.

  2. Voltage Matching: The unit compares generator and bus voltages; adjust the VOLTAGE pot to set tolerance.

  3. Frequency Matching: The unit controls the generator governor to match bus frequency; FREQ LED flashes during adjustment.

  4. Phase Synchronisation: When voltage and frequency are within limits, the unit monitors phase angle; SYNC LED flashes as phase aligns.

  5. Breaker Closure: When all conditions are met, SYNC LED lights solid; the unit outputs a closing pulse (adjust BREAKER pot for mechanical delay).

7. Safety Precautions

  • High Voltage Hazard: Only qualified electricians may install/service this unit; disconnect all power before wiring.

  • Arc Flash Risk: Isolate the generator and busbar before working on the synchroniser.

  • ESD Protection: Use an anti-static wristband when handling the unit to avoid PCB damage.

  • No Unauthorised Modification: Do not open the enclosure; tampering voids the warranty.

  • Environmental Limits: Do not operate outside -20°C to +70°C; avoid condensation.

8. Maintenance & Storage

8.1 Regular Maintenance (Every 6 Months)

  1. Visual Inspection: Check for loose terminals, damaged wiring, or corrosion.

  2. Cleaning: Wipe the front panel with a dry cloth; do not use liquid cleaners.

  3. Function Test: Verify voltage/frequency/phase settings and sync operation.

  4. Calibration: Adjust potentiometers if sync accuracy drifts (use a precision phase meter).

8.2 Storage Guidelines

  • Condition: Store in original packaging at 10–30°C, 30–70% RH.

  • Environment: Keep dry; avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

  • Duration: Shelf life ≤2 years; inspect before use if stored longer.

9. Troubleshooting
