SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A
Description
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A
Overview
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A is the Micrologic 5.0A electronic trip unit (UL/ANSI version) for Square D PowerPacT P‑frame, R‑frame and Masterpact NT/NW air circuit breakers. SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A delivers LSI selective protection plus built-in ammeter readout, it is a field-replaceable release assembly for North American specification low-voltage distribution breakers. SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A is widely supplied as exchange spare for ANSI switchgear overhaul and breaker upgrade projects.
Features
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A implements LSI protection functions: L long-time overload, S short-time delayed short-circuit, I instantaneous short-circuit. It supports zone selective interlocking (ZSI) for selective coordination between upstream and downstream breakers. An integrated ammeter provides local phase current indication for quick load checking. SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A uses interchangeable rating plugs to set the long-time pickup current, enabling flexible on-site current range adjustment without replacing the whole trip unit. It is self-powered from the breaker’s current transformers and does not require auxiliary power for protection operation. SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A carries internal hardware self-diagnosis to detect CT circuit failure or electronic anomalies, helping avoid blind spots or unintended nuisance tripping. Compared with S141A (3.0A LI), this model adds the short-time delay stage for selectivity; compared with S144A (6.0A LSIG), it does not include ground fault G protection. It complies with UL and CSA standards for ANSI power distribution equipment.
Specs
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A Trip unit type: Micrologic 5.0A. Protection function: LSI with ammeter. Compatibility: PowerPacT P, R; Masterpact NT, NW. Standard: UL / CSA ANSI. Setting method: rating plug + internal dip/rotary settings for time delays and pickup thresholds. This trip unit is not a standalone breaker; it must be installed into a matched breaker frame with corresponding CT sensors. SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A is widely supplied as service replacement spare for MCC and main distribution switchgear maintenance.
Principle
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A continuously samples three-phase current signals from the breaker CTs. The internal microprocessor tracks thermal accumulation for overload and compares fault magnitude against the LSI thresholds defined by the rating plug and time settings. When overload, delayed short-circuit or instantaneous short-circuit exceeds limits, the trip unit drives the breaker mechanical release mechanism to open contacts and isolate the fault. The real-time current readings of SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A can be viewed locally on the trip unit display. ZSI wiring allows it to block upstream instant trips so the closest breaker clears the fault first. If CT loss or internal electronics fault is detected, the unit raises a hardware alarm without unwanted tripping.
Applications
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC S143A is deployed for main incoming, bus tie and large feeder protection in ANSI-spec industrial plants, data centers, commercial campuses and water treatment low-voltage switchgear. It is selected for spare inventory and breaker retrofit projects where selective LSI coordination and local current indication are required, and ground fault protection is handled separately or not needed on that feeder. It is the mid-range selective electronic release for Square D PowerPacT and Masterpact ANSI breakers.
