Overview

PEPPERL+FUCHS KCD2-STC-EX1 is a single-channel isolated intrinsic safety barrier (SMART transmitter power supply) from Pepperl+Fuchs K-System series. It provides intrinsically safe power for 2-wire HART smart transmitters located in hazardous zones, while galvanically isolating the field side from the safe control side. It is widely supplied as exchange spare for chemical, oil & gas, refinery and petrochemical DCS cabinet and hazardous area instrument loop overhaul and replacement.

Features

PEPPERL+FUCHS KCD2-STC-EX1 delivers limited, energy-restricted power to 4–20 mA two-wire smart transmitters and supports bidirectional HART communication superimposed on the analog current loop. DIP switches select output mode: current source, current sink or 1–5 V voltage output for flexible DCS/PLC input matching. It integrates line fault detection for wire break and short-circuit conditions, with fault diagnostic indication.

PEPPERL+FUCHS KCD2-STC-EX1 comes with built-in test sockets directly on terminals for convenient HART communicator connection without breaking the loop. It carries SIL 2 capability (SC 3) under IEC 61508 for safety instrumented system applications. The slim 12.5 mm housing saves cabinet space and supports Power Rail bus power feeding. It meets ATEX, IECEx and EMC requirements for explosion protection.

Principle

PEPPERL+FUCHS KCD2-STC-EX1 limits voltage and current on the field side to energy levels incapable of igniting explosive gas mixtures. It powers the 2-wire transmitter and passes the 4–20 mA process signal across galvanic isolation to the safe-side control system. HART digital signals are modulated onto the current loop and transferred bidirectionally. The circuit continuously monitors loop current; out-of-range values indicate open circuit, short circuit or transmitter fault for host system diagnostics.

Applications

PEPPERL+FUCHS KCD2-STC-EX1 is deployed for pressure, level, flow and temperature transmitters in classified hazardous zones of refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms and gas processing facilities. It is selected for spare inventory and SIS/DCS cabinet retrofit projects for existing Pepperl+Fuchs K-System intrinsic safety systems.
