XYCOM PM8480 (Industrial-grade VME Bus Prototype / General I/O Board Card)
Description
XYCOM PM8480 (Industrial-grade VME Bus Prototype / General I/O Board Card)
XYCOM PM8480 is a 6U VME bus prototype development / general I/O board developed by XYCOM (now part of Pro-face), belonging to the XVME-085/087 series of compatible models. It is used for custom circuit prototype building, signal conditioning, and general I/O expansion in VME systems, widely used in spare parts and customized development scenarios for old industrial control, DCS, and test equipment. It has been discontinued, and most available ones on the market are second-hand / refurbished pieces.
I. Model Positioning and Core Functionality
PM8480: Original material number of XYCOM, corresponding to VME-bus 6U, prototype development + general I/O mixed board card.
Core positioning:
Prototype development: Used for rapid verification and setup of custom logic, signal conditioning, and interface conversion in VME systems.
General I/O expansion: Compatible with digital / analog signal acquisition and control, compatible with XVME-085/087 architecture.
Old system spare parts: Replace the same series XVME-085, XVME-087 or compatible VME I/O boards.
II. Hardware Specifications (Based on XVME-085/087 Architecture)
1. Bus and Form
Bus: VME-bus (IEEE 1014), 6U single-width (160mm×233.4mm).
Connectors: P1 (96-pin, address / data / control), P2 (VME expansion).
Power supply: +5V (VME bus power supply), ±12V auxiliary.
2. Core Function Area
Prototype wiring grid: Large area without solder pads, supports custom circuit soldering (op-amps, optocouplers, relays, etc.).
Standard VME buffer: Data / address / control signal buffering, supports VME interrupts (IRQ1–IRQ7).
Address decoding: DIP switch / jumper selects base address and address space (Short I/O/Standard Memory).
Status indicator lights: PWR (power), RUN (operation), FAIL (fault).
3. I/O and Expansion
Digital I/O: Reserved TTL level I/O channels, configurable input / output.
Analog interface: Supports 0–10V/4–20mA signal conditioning (requires external op-amp / isolation module).
Interrupt support: VME bus interrupt generation and response, supports Daisy-Chain interrupt chain.
III. Key Features
Flexible customization: Prototype grid supports rapid setup of custom signal processing circuits, compatible with non-standard I/O requirements.
Industrial-grade reliability: Wide temperature range (-20℃ to +60℃), anti-vibration (5g), moisture-proof coating, suitable for harsh conditions.
VME ecosystem compatibility: Seamless integration with XYCOM XVME series (XVME-240, XVME-401, etc.), plug-and-play.
Easy maintenance: Standard 6U size, supports hot swapping; status lights are intuitive, faults can be quickly located.
IV. Typical Applications
Industrial automation: VME control systems in metallurgy, chemical industry, and power, custom I/O expansion and signal conditioning.
Test measurement: ATE equipment, data acquisition systems, prototype verification and non-standard interface development.
Old system upgrade: Replace XVME-085/087 or other brand VME prototype boards to reduce renovation costs.
V. Alternatives and Spare Parts Recommendations
Original replacement: XVME-087 (functionally enhanced prototype board, compatible with PM8480).
Compatible solutions: Acromag, Motorola 6U VME prototype / I/O board, check address mapping and interrupt logic.
VI. Maintenance Points
Regularly clean dust from the grid and connectors to avoid short circuits.
When soldering the prototype circuit, control the temperature (≤300℃) to prevent PCB damage.
Check the gold plating layer of VME connectors, clean or replace in time when oxidized.
